THE BOOK DRIVE

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only once. And who can trust someone who din't bring book with them? The Rotaract Club Of Ongata Rongai had the privilege of adding more lives to the kids at Overcomes Children's Home by providing for then new syllabus books for grade, 1,2 and 3.

BRIEF ABOUT OVERCOMES CHILDREN'S HOME

Overcomes Caring Ministries was started in 1999 by brethren who came together having a burden of reaching children who were on the streets. They were aware of many orphaned and disadvantaged children in the slums of Kibera in Nairobi.
A small piece of property was made available to them, so they put up a small building to house some of the boys and started a school for them.
Before long, they realized that many children in the neighborhood were not attending school and would never have an opportunity to go to school.
Most of them are in homes where parents or guardians are extremely poor, often turning to desperate means to provide for their families. Following the burdens God had placed on their hearts for these children, OCM serves the poorest of the poor in the area.
This year OCM has 24 children leaving on site with 103 children attending the pre school and primary classes. The home would accept more of the children in the area if the facilities and costs allowed for it. Children often come to the gate asking to come to school.
OCM has 9 children attending secondary school who live on site. OCM children are very happy when they are at school despite the difficulties they experience at home.
The center also provides for them lunch at school. They also learn about God's love for them and know that they are loved and valued by the staff at the center.
The center also provides a safe place for the children to hang out on weekends. On Saturdays morning many of the children from the village come to spend the day.

14TH APRIL

So this was the big day for our visit to the home. We made lunch for the kids, played with them and delivered to the books to them. Click here for the pictures of that day.
